U.S. Army Col. Rob Urquhart

Deputy Commanding Officer

COL Rob Urquhart graduated from Norwich University in Northfield, VT in 1990 and commissioned in the Infantry. His military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Infantry Officer Advanced Course, Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. He currently serves as the Deputy Commander, Joint Task Force-North (JTF-N) at Fort Bliss, TX.

COL Urquhart’s initial assignment was a Rifle Platoon Leader in A Co, 1-506th Infantry at Camp Liberty, Republic of Korea. Upon his return, he was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. There he served as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Battalion S4. While at Fort Drum, he deployed in support of Joint Task Force-Bravo in Honduras and Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti.

COL Urquhart served with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, TX. He served as the Battalion Maintenance Officer, and commanded C Company. His assignments included a deployment in support of Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia. In 1999, COL Urquhart served at the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) at Fort Polk, LA as a Mechanized Infantry Platoon O/C, Operations Group S4, Brigade Maneuver O/C, and Brigade Tactical Analysis Feedback Officer. He then deployed in 2003 to and served as a Training Advisor, Office of the Program Manager-Saudi Arabian National Guard (OPM-SANG) where he advised the SANG G3-Training and King Khalid Light Infantry Brigade in Riyadh, King of Saudi Arabia.

In 2004, he returned to the 10th Mountain Division to serve as the Division Chief of Exercises, and Battalion Executive Officer for 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team. His assignment to the 10th Mountain Division included a combat deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Upon his return, he served at the Future Force Integration Directorate (FFID) at Fort Bliss, TX. He served as the Executive Officer, TRADOC Capabilities Manager-Future Combat Systems (TCM-FCS), and Chief of the Commanding General’s (CG’s) Initiatives Group. In 2009, he commanded the Validation Transition Team (VTT), International Security Assistance Force Joint Command (IJC) during combat deployment in Afghanistan. He returned to the 10th Mountain Division to command Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion (Rear) during the division’s deployment to Regional Command-South in Afghanistan.

In 2012, he served as the Chief of the CG’s Initiatives Group, V Corps in Wiesbaden, Germany and during the Corps’ deployment and assumption of the IJC mission in Afghanistan. He returned to Shaw Air Force Base, SC to serve as the Executive Officer to the CG, U.S. Army Central/3rd Army. In 2014, he attended and graduated from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA. Upon graduation, he served as the TCM-Stryker Brigade Combat Team (TCM-SBCT) and Deputy Director of the Maneuver Capabilities and Integration Directorate (MCDID) at the Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, GA. From 2018-2022, he served as the Assistant Chief of Staff, G3/5/7 at the U.S Army Joint Modernization Command (JMC) at Fort Bliss, TX.

COL Urquhart’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Combat Action Badge, and Parachutist Badge. He holds a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the Army War College and Bachelor of Arts in Peace, War, and Diplomacy from Norwich University. He is married and has two sons.
