Engineer, intelligence troops to enhance southern border security operations

PETERSON Space Force Base, Colo. – U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) announces more than 600 additional service members have been approved to deploy as part of USNORTHCOM’s mission to bolster security at the U.S. southern border:

  • Approximately 40 intelligence analysts from Air Force active and reserve components will support the Joint Intelligence Task Force – Southern Border.
  • Approximately 590 engineers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Army 18th Airborne Corps will conduct tasks including planning, coordinating, integrating and an assortment of engineer operations. Specific engineer missions will be determined after the units reach the southern border area.
    • 20th Engineer Brigade from Fort Bragg, North Carolina
    • 19th Engineer Battalion from Fort Knox, Kentucky
    • 15th Engineer Company from Fort Knox, Kentucky
    • 687th Engineer Company from Fort Johnson, Louisiana

The exact timeline for these deployments has not been determined.

The deployment of these units will increase the total number of troops deployed or scheduled to deploy to the southern border to approximately 9,600.

The exact number of personnel will fluctuate as units rotate personnel and as additional forces are tasked to deploy once planning efforts are finalized.
